Walmart, a retail giant, has officially announced the layoff of hundreds of corporate employees in a memo issued by Chief People Officer Donna Morris. The memo stated that changes within certain sectors of the business will lead to the reduction of several hundred campus roles.

Support for Affected Associates
While emphasizing the relatively small percentage of overall layoffs, Morris assured that the company is dedicated to providing support for every affected associate. Those impacted have already been notified of the decision, and Walmart intends to work closely with them in the forthcoming days and months to navigate their future paths.
Uncertainty Surrounding Walmart Layoff Numbers
Despite the confirmation of layoffs, specific figures regarding the number of affected employees or their respective positions were not disclosed by the company. This announcement comes just before Walmart’s eagerly anticipated first-quarter earnings report.
Relocation Mandate for Remote Workers
In addition to the layoffs, Walmart is mandating relocation for a significant portion of its remote workforce, including employees based in offices in Dallas, Atlanta, and the Toronto Global Tech office. The company has stated that the decision to bring back Home Office associates into campus offices was made in February 2022.
According to Morris, Walmart believes that physical presence fosters better collaboration, innovation, and agility, thereby strengthening the company culture and facilitating the growth and development of associates.
Walmart Relocation Plans
Walmart has outlined relocation plans for affected employees, with most being directed to the corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. However, others will have the option to relocate to corporate offices in the New York City or San Francisco metro areas.
New Home Office Campus
The retailer is currently constructing a new home office campus spanning 350 acres in Bentonville, comprising 12 office buildings. Construction commenced in 2019, and the new facilities are scheduled to open in phases through 2025. Walmart anticipates that most corporate employees in Northwest Arkansas will transition to the new campus upon its completion.
