In September of 2023, Apple unveiled its latest high-end flagship smartphones, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which are now available alongside the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models. These iPhone 15 Pro models offer an expanded range of features not found in the regular iPhone 15 series, including advanced camera technology, improved displays, a faster A17 chip, and more.
Maintaining the same screen sizes as their predecessors, the iPhone 15 Pro models come in 6.1 and 6.7-inch variants and sport a design that bears some resemblances to the iPhone 14 Pro series. However, there are notable differences to highlight. Instead of stainless steel, Apple has opted for a frame constructed from a new titanium alloy, the same material used in spacecraft. Additionally, the iPhone 15 Pro models come in fresh titanium color options, such as white, black, natural, and blue. This shift to titanium not only adds a touch of uniqueness but also results in a lighter overall weight compared to the iPhone 14 Pro models.

The new titanium material boasts a fresh matte, brushed texture, and it is paired with an internal aluminum frame that serves to enhance heat dissipation and make repairing the back glass easier. Apple has also refined the design, resulting in more contoured edges for the frame and significantly slimmer display bezels. The front of the iPhone retains its protection through Apple’s Ceramic Shield material, which is touted as the most resilient glass used in any smartphone.
For the display, Apple maintains the Super Retina XDR Display introduced in the previous year, now equipped with Always-On display technology and a ProMotion refresh rate of 120Hz. The iPhone 15 Pro Max boasts a resolution of 2796×1290, while the iPhone 15 Pro features a resolution of 2556×1179. Besides the reduced bezel size, no other modifications have been made to the display, and it still incorporates the Dynamic Island at the top.
In lieu of the traditional Lightning port, the iPhone 15 Pro models come equipped with a USB-C port, offering USB 3 transfer speeds of up to 10Gb/s. Charging has also transitioned to USB-C cables, enabling the same cord to be used for charging the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The USB-C port facilitates direct charging of AirPods or an Apple Watch using an iPhone. Furthermore, 15W MagSafe charging remains available, and Apple has introduced support for Qi2 wireless charging.
A notable addition is the customizable Action button, inspired by the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra, which replaces the traditional mute switch. This button can be configured for various functions, such as launching the camera, activating the flashlight, recording voice memos, or triggering a shortcut. The Action button is integrated with the Dynamic Island, offering visual feedback alongside haptic feedback.
An enhanced 48-megapixel primary camera has been introduced, offering notable improvements in low-light performance and a new default image resolution of 24 megapixels, striking a balance between high-quality images and practical file sizes. This represents a significant enhancement over the previous 12-megapixel default resolution. The primary camera allows for various focal length adjustments, including 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm, and there’s an option to capture 48-megapixel HEIF images that consume less storage space compared to RAW images.
The iPhone now automatically captures portrait photos whenever a person or pet is detected in the frame or when you manually tap to focus. This feature allows for post-capture adjustments of depth and focal points, even if you haven’t initially selected the portrait mode. Images exhibit sharper details, more vibrant colors, and improved performance in low-light conditions. The night mode has been refined for sharper results, while Smart HDR 5 ensures that subjects and backgrounds are captured with true-to-life skin tones, brighter highlights, richer midtones, and deeper shadows when viewed within the Photos app.
Key Innovations and Upgrades in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max
A new Ultrawide camera has been incorporated to allow more light in. While the iPhone 15 Pro features a standard 3x Telephoto lens, the iPhone 15 Pro Max boasts an upgraded 5x Telephoto lens utilizing a novel tetraprism design. Apple has also introduced a new optical image stabilization system, complete with an autofocus 3D sensor-shift module, delivering clearer photos.
Powering these advancements is the A17 Pro chip, Apple’s pioneering 3-nanometer chip constructed on an updated node. This chip boasts the most significant GPU redesign in Apple’s history, resulting in GPU performance that’s up to 20% faster than its predecessor, the A16. CPU performance has also seen an increase of up to 10%. Additionally, the new Neural Engine operates at double the speed of its predecessor.
The inclusion of a 6-core GPU has enabled hardware-accelerated ray tracing, enabling the iPhone to run console games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 for the first time while also enhancing augmented reality applications. Furthermore, a dedicated AV1 decoder has been added for more efficient video streaming. The A17 Pro chip empowers a feature allowing the iPhone to connect to external storage, enabling the direct recording of 4K 60fps ProRes video to the external storage device. In conjunction with this, Apple has introduced an option for Log encoding, making the iPhone 15 Pro models the first smartphones to support the Academy Color Encoding System, utilized by filmmakers.
Later in the year, the iPhone 15 Pro models will gain the capability to record 3D spatial video, which can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro when it is launched the following year.
Apple has introduced a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip that enhances connectivity by enabling two iPhones equipped with this chip to connect at a range that’s three times longer than before. This improved connectivity powers a new feature called Precision Finding for Find My Friends. This feature is particularly handy in crowded areas, allowing you to precisely locate your friends.
Moreover, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max come with Wi-Fi 6E support, providing up to twice the speed for Wi-Fi connections and access to the 6GHz bands when used with a compatible Wi-Fi 6E router. Additionally, Thread support has been incorporated, paving the way for future integrations within the Home app.
A notable expansion is the inclusion of Emergency Roadside Assistance via Satellite, which builds upon the existing Emergency SOS via Satellite feature. In situations where you encounter car issues in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi signal, you can utilize satellite services to contact AAA, Apple’s partner in this endeavor.
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are scheduled to be released on Friday, September 22, and pre-orders will be available starting at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, September 15.
